Verses From The Abstract

q-tip_tribe.jpg

Jay Smooth took a trip into his archives and brought out a series of audio clips from a 2002 interview with Q-Tip, in which Tip talks about early Tribe production techniques, shady industry execs, musical segregation and more. Take a listen.

That upcoming album that Tip is speaking of, we’ll finally get that sometime this June. Crazy, right? Pin that on the industry. He’s actually done a few projects (Kamaal The Abstract, Live At The Renaissance, Open) since his last official release (Amplified), however, they didn’t fit inside the mainstream’s little box, and never received a proper release–they’ve since leaked to the web. In the meantime, I’m hoping that this album doesn’t fall victim to any sudden label push-backs between now and June.

Creative Apple, Honest Disney

A rececent study, conducted by two Duke University Professors, found that individuals who were subliminally exposed to the logos of Apple and Disney saw increases in their level of creativity and honesty:

What does your brand do for consumers? If you’re Apple, you make them more creative, and if you’re Disney, you make them more honest.

So says research published in the April issue of the Journal of Consumer Research that found test subjects who were shown a logo for 30 milliseconds — a subliminal flash that was not actually “seen” — were much more likely to be creative or candid in the cases of Apple and the Disney Channel, respectively.

DVNO!

I’m still in the dark when it comes to certain areas of electronic music, but no matter the genre, I can still recognize a dope video when I see one. Here’s the latest from French electro duo, Justice:

Props to So-Me on art direction, and Machine Molle on motion design. The old school logos and tv bumper spoofs are pretty clever (recognize any?). I wonder if we’ll see a slightly altered, yet equally dope, hip-hop version of this video sometime in the near future? Last time, if you remember, it was Kanye who linked up with So-Me to style his Good Life video– which was based on So’s work here.

Are Netflix Rentals Headed to Xbox 360?

netflix_xbox.jpg

It sounds like Netflix is halfway open to the idea:

Online movie rental company Netflix Inc has surveyed its subscribers to gauge their interest in streaming movies to their televisions using Microsoft Corp’s Xbox 360, a Netflix spokesman said on Monday.

Netflix spokesman Steve Swasey declined to say whether the survey indicated a soon-to-be announced partnership between the two companies, but said Netflix was interested in getting its movies to consumers’ TVs “in as many ways as possible.”

As a current Netflix subscriber and proud Xbox 360 owner (one of the few MS products that I ride for), this would certainly be a match made in heaven! Unfortunately, I wasn’t surveyed (what’s up with that?), but I’m hoping that those who were did their part to move Netflix in the right direction with this. We’ll find out soon enough, I’m sure.

On Deck: The Legends of Rap

A major hat tip to Darien of flwrpt. for bringing these Legends of Rap trading cards to my attention. Before now they were apparently stocked by Colette (Paris) exclusively, however, they’re now available stateside at YouWorkForThem. I’ll be picking up a deck of my own very soon!

hiphoptradingcards.jpg

While I’ve seen similar hip hop trading cards in the past, this deck (32 cards/hip-hop pioneers in all) is the first that I’ve come across that features original illustrations of the artists, instead of archive photography (most of which we’ve seen a thousand times over)–definitely a plus!

Discover YouTube in High Definition

Well, maybe not HD exactly, but by adding &fmt=18 to the end of YouTube urls you’re directed to a version of the video with higher image and sound quality. It’s a slight increase, but it’s definitely noticeable in some cases. Try it out for yourself with the video below, and see what you get.

Kanye’s Graduation, the Soundtrack to Classic Sci-Fi Flicks?

It doesn’t seem too far off. Have a look at these videos created by Kanye and video editor Derrick Lee that were used as backdrops during last year’s listening session for Graduation. They’re condensed versions of the classic sci-fi flicks 2001: A Space Odyssey, Akira and Tron. Peep:

A Scarf Worthy of a Sneakerhead’s Love

necklace1.jpg

I already know what you’re thinking. “Spring is officially here, so why are you posting about a measely winter scarf?” Well, that’s because it’s not really a scarf, it’s a Necklace, and being as though the Necklace is specifically crafted (handcrafted, that is) for sneakerheads and Class A hipsters alike, it transcends any and all seaonal restrictions.

Conceived by the pop culture investigators at IHavePop, Necklaces are made of custom 100% cotton shoe laces, and are hand knitted by a group of elderly women in The Netherlands. The real kicker: only 10 exist in the entire world. So you can rest assure that the Necklace won’t go the way of these. Another interseting fact here, is that 10% of the sales proceeds go towards Arthritis research. I’m pretty sure the elderly women responsible for constructing these had some some influence on this decision.

I’d love to see a second run of these done in assorted colors and lace types (e.g. fatlaces). That would be dope! In the meantime, holla at Reed Space if you want to check out the Necklace up close and personal, they received 3 of the world’s 10.

Sacrificing Your Face to Save Your Macbook Air

croseshiner.jpg

PBS talk show host, Charlie Rose knows a thing or two about this:

Viewers of the Charlie Rose show tonight were stunned to see the normally composed Rose looking like he’d just been in a bar fight. He has a very bad black eye and a bandage over part of his forehead. I contacted the show’s producers to hear what happened. Earlier today, they said, Rose tripped in a pothole while walking on 59th Street in Manhattan. He was carrying a newly purchased MacBook Air and made a quick (but ultimately flawed) decision while falling: sacrifice the face, protect the computer. “In doing so, he pretty much hit the pavement face first, unfortunately,” they said.

Ouch! It’s good to see that he’s doin alright (minus the shiner), but he still gets the gas face for buying a Macbook Air.
