“Erykah Badu is a Brand”

March 2nd, 2008

(disclaimer: Look away from the eyes!)

And she’s grinding hard in ‘08…
One album down, two more plus a lifestyle magazine on the way:

After a public bout of writer’s block that led to her “Frustrated Artist” tour in 2003 and 2004, Ms. Badu is eager to promote what she calls her magnum opus. “New AmErykah” is part of a creative torrent that includes a sequel record, due in the summer, and an unrelated retro-minded album, “Lowdown Loretta Brown,” scheduled for the fall, both on Universal Motown. Ms. Badu also plans to start a lifestyle magazine, The Freaq, this summer; the first issue will come with a copy of “New AmErykah: Part Two.” Both records will also be available on a U.S.B. stick for fans to plug into their computers; for added value Ms. Badu wants to record a U.S.B. commentary track to explain her references and inspiration. A tour will start in May.

Bruh were you feeling New Amerykah? I may not have gave it enough of a chance. It didn’t give me that “wow” feeling when I normally listen to her stuff. I was feeling the single though.

P.S. She was branded at the start of her career as the original “earth girl/cream of nature” chick lol

I’m right there with you on this one. Usually her albums have me hooked on first listen, but this one’s a different story… It’s taking some time to grow on me. It’s definitely not a bad album though, I’m feeling her thoughts, but a lot of it seems so rough and unfinished. The single “Honey” is definitely the most polished song on the entire album (in my opinion)…then again, that track wasn’t gonna be included on this one originally (hence the bonus label).

We’ll see how the other two albums turn out.
