Don’t Let This Fly Over Your Head
March 15th, 2008
No pun intended. However, to be sure that fans don’t misinterpret the artwork from their upcoming album Rising Down, ?uestlove of The Roots delivers a bit of background info to put things into perspective:
This drawing is entitled NEGRO RULE. and it pretty much sums up the feeling of the Confederate Union towards the newly freed slaves and the idea that if given power they would reek havoc and chaos on the country.
That was 1898. Ironically, here in 2008 similar feelings are held towards Hip-Hop and even a *certain individual* in the current presidential race. But you already knew that, I’m sure.
You gotta love The Roots for consistently coming through with relevant, thought
provoking album covers.

That reminds me of a postsecret card from a few weeks ago. Talk about irrational fears… But it’s kind of humorous….
check it out.

So far in 08, the OKAYPLAYER family is dropping the hottest album covers, first BADU, now the ROOTS…
I’m excited to see that some artists still care about making dope album covers.
Good post…

@ Chuck - wow @ the postcard. Its funny, sad and frightening all at the same time. the worst part about it is the fact that tons of people are casting their ballots with those very thoughts in mind.
@flwrpt - I’d definitely like to see more hip-hop artist put in work with their album covers/liner notes. but you know what, instead of them just moving away from generic photos and logos, I’d like to see them take advantage of new technology and translate things into a whole digital experience. there’s so much that can be done. might be a job for FLWRPT.
